Guyana’s progress in building a model national healthcare system was the focus of a recent panel discussion at the Concordia Annual Summit in New York City.  The panel featured Guyana’s President, H.E. Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali, who was joined by Hess CEO John Hess and Dr. Rachel Vreeman of the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at Mount Sinai to discuss a national healthcare initiative launched in 2022 by the Guyana Ministry of Health, the Mount Sinai Health System and Hess Corporation.

During the panel, which was moderated by Mount Sinai Health System CEO Dr. Brendan Carr, President Ali described his vision—“to build a world-class ecosystem to support healthcare provision for the people of Guyana.” To realize that vision, a team of more than 40 healthcare experts from the Mount Sinai Health System are working with the Government of Guyana to bring  higher quality primary care across Guyana’s public health system, develop specialized services and modernize the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. This work is funded jointly by Hess Corporation and the Government of Guyana.

To date, Guyana’s national healthcare initiative has:

  • Screened approximately 70% of nursery school-aged children and provided follow-up care to improve children’s health including vision, speech, hearing, learning ability, vaccine checks and dental health
  • Established comprehensive, centralized pathology and laboratory services including remote pathology services that will allow Guyanese pathologists to connect with medical experts from around the world to swiftly process slides of tissues and reduce patient diagnosis times from three months to as little as three days
  • Provided comprehensive training to 900 nurses, lab technicians and other healthcare practitioners.

Hess’ support for the national healthcare initiative is part of its commitment to make a long-lasting, positive social impact wherever the company does business.  Hess holds a 30% interest in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana.
