The Stampede development in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) is leveraging Hess' proven deepwater capabilities and maximizing the use of Lean processes to deliver the project safely, on time and on budget.
Located about 115 miles south of Port Fourchon, La., Stampede is one of the largest undeveloped fields in the GoM. It is highly complex, with some of the deepest wells in the world at reservoir depths of about 30,000 feet. Hess holds a 25 percent working interest and is the operator of the field.
In 2016, the company successfully lifted and set the topsides deck on the hull. All major lifts are now complete, drilling operations continue to progress and first oil remains on schedule for 2018.
Hess credits the progress to date to close collaboration with contractors such as Kiewit Offshore Services (KOS) that supports the company's vision of safety and efficiency.
Hess and KOS, for example, have worked together as one team, applying lean processes and principles, empowering workers to be creative and innovative to deliver specific components of the project as expected.
A prime example was how the team collaborated on more safe and efficient ways to build the massive blast wall, intended to shield the living quarters in case of an incident. With a surface area equal to 1.6 times that of a wing of a Boeing 747, it is the largest blast wall KOS has ever built and lifted as a single structural component.
To address potential safety, environmental and quality concerns, KOS assembled the wall indoors in a horizontal configuration as a single unit. This eliminated working at heights, and reduced the impact of weather. The team completed the project two months ahead of schedule and with 50 percent fewer man hours than typical projects involving a high-risk operation, also significantly reducing the inherent risk factor.
