Hess Malaysia has been recognized as one of the top corporate citizens in the country at the annual MY AMCHAM CARES event, which seeks to honour those American - Malaysian Chamber of Commerce members that have shown a commitment to best practice in corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Speaking at the event AMCHAM, Executive Director, Siobhan Das thanked Hess for their participation in the MY AMCHAM CARES program and for their active involvement in the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program. “AMCHAM congratulates Hess for providing a benchmark for best practice in CSR in Malaysia,” she said.

Zhiyong Zhao, Hess vice-president Asia said: “Creating a long-lasting positive impact in the communities where we do business is part of our commitment to be a good corporate citizen. Education is a primary focus of our CSR initiatives in Malaysia and all over the world, as we believe education helps transform lives. I am proud of our involvement in the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program and the important work it is doing,” he said.

Mike Turner, Hess senior vice-president of global production added to the comments by noting that: “Hess’ mission is to be the most trusted energy partner wherever we operate. As one of Malaysia’s largest natural gas producers we are proud to play a role supporting the building blocks of prosperity and helping support important education initiatives like the ETA program,” he said.

The ETA program aims to help students boost their confidence and improve their proficiency in the English language. Additionally, it promotes goodwill by establishing friendship and mutual understanding between the ETAs, students, teachers and their communities. The American ETAs serve in rural secondary schools across Malaysia for ten months as supplemental English instructors and cultural ambassadors.

In 2018, the program in Kelantan impacted ~ 6,000 students through classroom learning as well as English camps, with varying themes centered around leadership, culture, environment, health, public speaking and more. Hess Malaysia employees also contributed significantly to the English camps throughout the year by volunteering and facilitating the teaching and learning outside the classroom.

The program is administered by the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE), in coordination with the Ministry of Education. Hess Malaysia is the official sponsor and biggest corporate contributor to the 2018 ETA Program in Kelantan. Hess has committed RM1.57 million (USD375,000) over the next several years to support this important program.
